西方人結(jié)婚一般都要在教堂里舉行婚禮。在舉行婚禮時(shí),新娘穿著白色的禮服,挽著自己的父親,隨著結(jié)婚進(jìn)行曲從教堂入口一直走到主持婚禮的牧師面前。因此,to walk down the aisle就是“結(jié)婚”的意思。

Plank就是很厚的木板。據(jù)說(shuō),過(guò)去海盜攔截船只后會(huì)逼迫沒(méi)有利用價(jià)值的人們走到一塊木板上,然后將他們推進(jìn)海里。To walk the plank的說(shuō)法由此得來(lái),現(xiàn)在多指“被除名”。
