The death toll from Australia’s raging wildfires rose to 17 Wednesday as the country deployed military ships and aircraft to deliver supplies to stranded residents.

Authorities said three bodies were found at Lake Conjola on the coast of New South Wales, bringing the death toll in that state alone to 15.

About 330 miles south, in the state of Victoria, thousands of residents from the coastal town of Mallacoota were forced to flee to the beach on Tuesday as strong winds fueled flames that have now burned more than 12 million acres and destroyed 1,000 homes nationwide.
