If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, this one’s definitely a BFF.
Miners in Yakutia, Russia, have unearthed a never-before-seen diamond with a hollow center that holds yet another separate diamond. Dubbed the matryoshka diamond — a reference to Russian nesting dolls — the perplexing gem weighs just 0.124 grams, according to an announcement by Alrosa, a Russian mining company.
Researchers have long looked to diamonds for secrets to the universe, as the gems often capture rare minerals and ancient matter inside their crystalline tombs, but scientists say this one is baffling.
“I thought, ‘Holy cow, I never saw anything like that,’ ” Thomas Stachel, a University of Alberta mineralogist, told National Geographic. “We have been looking for diamonds now for a long time, and that is a first.”
Alrosa plans to send the mysterious stone to the Gemological Institute of America to be further analyzed, though there are a few possible explanations. A salty fluid may have once filled the rock but later dissolved or leaked out, leaving one piece of the diamond inside the cavity. Water may also have worked its way in and cleaned out or dissolved the inner material, with the tiny gem remaining behind.
