Buffett's China Investments
Buffett, a renowned investor who has rarely ventured outside the U.S., has already made a couple of investments in China and none in India.
But his Chinese investments have not exactly been smooth-sailing.

In 2003, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRKA, BRKB), the investment company headed by Buffett, bought a 13% stake in Chinese government-run PetroChina Ltd. (PTR). But in 2007, Buffett had to defend this investment from allegations that the oil company had exposure to Sudan, which has come under fire for human-rights violations. In response to a shareholder proposal asking him to withdraw the investment from PetroChina, Buffett stood his ground and said he had seen no proof that PetroChina had operations in Sudan. Later that year, however, he sold most of his stake, a move he attributed to gains in his investments rather than the Sudan allegations.
In 2008, a Berkshire subsidiary invested $230 million in Chinese battery maker BYD Co. (1211.HK), saying the move reflected the emergence of Chinese companies as important technology research and development centers. According to MarketBeat, this investment was worth $2 billion in February.
In contrast, Berkshire has no direct investment in India, partly because of limitations on foreign investments in the country. At Berkshire's annual shareholder meeting Saturday, Buffett's partner Charlie Munger said that China will grow faster because the Chinese government can get more done, while in India the government has created 'paralysis,' according to people present at the meeting.
Buffett added, however, that he admired the democracy that has led to the paralysis. And it's no secret that he is a fan of his Indian-born lieutenant Ajit Jain, who heads some of Berkshire's reinsurance businesses and who Buffett has said 'cannot be replaced.'
Many believe that Buffett's visit to India next year could result in some investments. 'Their first (investment) in India may not be an insurance company (the main business of Berkshire),' says Mohnish Prabrai, a money manager in California who considers Buffett a guru.
One thing is clear: Indians and Chinese both know the value of Buffett's time. In 2007, Indian-born Pabrai bid $650,000 during a charity auction to have lunch with the investor. The next year, a hedge-fund manager from Hong Kong, Zhao Danyang paid $2.1 million for the privilege.
That record has yet to be broken. Any takers from India?
