What foods should not be refrigerated?

Most homes these days have refrigerators and have a habit of storing all the food in it. However, in fact, not all foods are suitable for storage in the refrigerator, not to mention that each food has a different way of preservation.

If we do not know how to properly preserve, some foods, when stored in the refrigerator, can lose their nutrition and even be poisonous, easily affecting health. Here are 7 foods that sisters should never store in the refrigerator.

Food should not be refrigerated

1. Potatoes

土豆

According to the US Food Standards Agency (FSA), potatoes are foods you should never keep in the refrigerator - as they can be harmful.

“The most important food that should not be refrigerated is potatoes,” explains the FSA's website. When they are stored in the refrigerator, the starch in potatoes is converted to sugar. When baked or fried, these sugars combine with the amino acid asparagine and create the chemical acrylamide, which is believed to be harmful to health.

2. Watermelon

In the summer, many people like to eat melons in the refrigerator because it will be cooler. However, everyone should know that melons contain many natural antioxidants that are good for health, can prevent cancer or many other problems.

Watermelon, for example, contains several antioxidants such as lycopene and beta-carotene. But these are lost when we put the watermelon in the refrigerator. Therefore, if cut watermelon, you should wrap it with food wrap to limit the loss of nutrients.

3. Garlic

Many people have the habit of leaving garlic in the refrigerator without knowing this will cause the garlic to spoil at a faster rate by adding moisture, unless the garlic is peeled and prepared. It is best to keep the garlic in a dry place, with good air circulation, at room temperature and away from light. Garlic will also last longer if left intact until you're ready to use it.

4. Tomatoes

Many people like to refrigerate tomatoes because they think it will be crunchier and cooler when added to salads. However this is not recommended. Keeping tomatoes at temperatures below 12 degrees C will affect the nutrients of this fruit, damage the inner membrane of the fruit, alter the taste and texture.

Cold temperatures alter the natural texture, hindering the production of volatile compounds found in tomatoes. 65% of these compounds will disappear if refrigerated.

Tomatoes will lose their flavor and may taste slightly watery and underripe. Many studies have shown that tomatoes stored in the natural environment have a much better taste than those stored in the refrigerator.

5. Eggs

According to a study published in the Journal of Food Protection, eggs when stored at extremely low temperatures, their nutritional value decreases.

The essential minerals and enzymes found in eggs can lose their effects on human health when eggs are stored in the refrigerator because cold temperatures can destroy the active enzymes. What's more, this study also found that eggs stored in the refrigerator had a higher risk of becoming contaminated with salmonella.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause infections like stomach ailments and typhoid fever. So it is better to keep eggs out of the refrigerator and use them quickly so they don't spoil.

6. Herbs

Herbs and basil are tropical plants that cannot tolerate cold. Therefore, during storage should limit to the refrigerator but should store at indoor temperature.

7. Onions

The whole onion is best kept in a dark and cool place. They contain starch, so they will be damp, soaked in water and easily damaged if stored in the refrigerator for too long. Once cut, onions should be sealed in a can and kept in the refrigerator.
