第五十六課 善良的回報(bào)

One day a lady, who was riding in a coach, saw a lad on the road bare-foot and seemingly very foot-sore.She asked the coachman to take him up, and said she would pay for him.

有一天，一位坐著馬車(chē)的女士看見(jiàn)路上一個(gè)光著腳的少年，他的腳似乎很痛。于是，她讓馬車(chē)夫帶上他并說(shuō)會(huì)為他付錢(qián)。

When the coach reached the end of its journey, the kind lady found that the poor lad was bound for the nearest sea-port, to offer himself as a sailor.

當(dāng)馬車(chē)到達(dá)旅途的盡頭時(shí)，這個(gè)善良的女士發(fā)現(xiàn)這個(gè)可憐的小伙兒是要前往最近的海港，想做一名水手。

Twenty years afterwards, on the same road, a sea-captain who was on a coach saw an old lady walking wearily along, and he made the coachman pull up his horses.

20年后，在同樣的路上，一位坐在馬車(chē)上的船長(zhǎng)看到一位虛弱地行走著的老婦人，他讓馬車(chē)夫拉住了他的馬。

He put the old lady inside, saying, "I'll pay for her." When they next changed horses the old lady thanked the captain; "for," said she, "I am too poor to pay for a ride now."

他拉那位老婦人進(jìn)了車(chē)，說(shuō)“我會(huì)為她付錢(qián)的”。當(dāng)他們換下一批馬的時(shí)候，老婦人向船長(zhǎng)道謝：“因?yàn)槲姨F了以至于暫時(shí)付不起車(chē)費(fèi)。”

The captain told her that he always felt for those who had to walk as she had been doing; and said, "I remember, twenty years ago, near this very place, I was a poor lad walking along the road, and a kind lady paid for me to ride."

船長(zhǎng)告訴她說(shuō)他一直都能理解那些像老婦人剛剛那樣虛弱地行走在街上的人，因?yàn)樗f(shuō)“我記得20年前，在這附近，我也是一個(gè)窮小子走在這條路上，一個(gè)善良的女士為我付了車(chē)費(fèi)。”

"Ah," said she, "I am that lady! but things have changed with me since then."

"Well," said the captain, "I have made a fortune, and have come home to enjoy it. I will allow yout wenty-five pounds a year as long as you live." The old lady burst into tears, and gratefully accepted the sailor's offer.

“好吧！”船長(zhǎng)說(shuō)“我掙了一筆錢(qián)，我已經(jīng)回家開(kāi)始享受了。我將會(huì)每年給你25英鎊只要你活著。”老婦人哭了，并感激地接受了水手的幫助。

"Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days." Let me explain these words. In the land of Egypt the river Nile overflows its banks once a year.

“把你的面包灑在水面上：在很多年之后你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)它。”讓我來(lái)解釋一下這句話(huà)。在埃及，尼羅河每年會(huì)有一次溢出河堤。

When the fields on the river sides are covered with the water, the people cast their seed on it, and the seed sinks down into the soft mud.

當(dāng)河邊的田地被水覆蓋，人們就會(huì)把種子放在上面，然后種子下沉至軟泥中。

When the water disappears, the seed takes root. "After many days" comes the harvest, and rich crops of grain are reaped.

當(dāng)河水退去，種子便扎根了。“很多天以后，收獲季到來(lái)了，人們可以收割豐裕的糧食谷物。”

The lady had cast her bread upon the waters. She had done a kind act to a poor boy; and, "after many days," he in return was able to do her a great kindness.

這個(gè)女士把面包灑在水面上。她對(duì)可憐男孩的善舉在“很多天后”，男孩反過(guò)來(lái)有能力對(duì)她回報(bào)了善行。
