The race for the US presidency kicks off in earnest shortly when the Democratic Party Convention gets underway. The four-day event is mostly online, as Laura Trevelyan reports.

This is a glorified Zoom political convention. Tonight, you're going to see speakers live and taped, who are coming in from remote locations all across the country. The control hub is in Milwaukee, but also New York, Los Angeles. There's all kinds of production that's gonna into tonight. But the theme of it politically tonight is "We the People". The idea is that Democrats are showcasing what they say is the broad appeal of Joe Biden. So you're gonna have Senator Bernie Sanders, speaking from the left. You're gonna have the former Republican governor John Kasich speaking. And then you're gonna have the headliner for tonight, Michelle Obama herself, the former first lady.

Opposition protesters in Belarus have held a 9th night of protests against the continued leadership of Alexander Lukashenko, saying his re-election as president with an official landslide majority was fraudulent. Several thousand demonstrators took over Independence Square in central Minsk. Here's Mike Sanders.

It could have been a carnival, the proliferation of balloons, and red and white opposition banners in Minsk on Monday evening. But there was steely determination, too. One placard showed President Alexander Lukashenko's trademark mustache, dripping protesters' blood, and behind bars. Doctors, subway workers, and television station employees join the strikes. Workers at a military truck plant heckled Mr. Lukashenko when he spoke of change eventually but now only over his dead body, he said. He left visibly angered, perhaps ready for the eventuality of a hasty departure into exile at some stage.

A court in Brazil has ordered Google, Facebook, and Twitter to remove the personal details of a 10-year-old rape victim, which were published by an activist opposed to the girl having an abortion. This enabled protesters to demonstrate outside the hospital, as Katy Watson reports.

This case has caused outrage across Brazil, a minor who'd been raped by her uncle and then harassed by anti-abortion activists outside the hospital where she was having the procedure. Brazil has strict laws on abortion, but she was legally allowed to have one. They are permitted in the case of rape when the mother's life is at risk, or in the case of a fetal birth defects known as anencephaly. The girl's personal details appear to have been initially released by a far-right supporter of Jair Bolsonaro, known as Sara Winter, an anti-abortion activist herself.

Thousands of anti-government demonstrators have marched through cities across Argentina waving the country's flag and holding placards. They're criticizing quarantine restrictions and proposed judicial reform, which they claim would allow the government to shield officials from corruption charges.
