英語早間課堂:話說地道美語 Lesson 12 (1)
首先，let's have a review. 大家還記得在第10課中我們講到的(在財(cái)政經(jīng)濟(jì)上的)免遭滅頂之災(zāi)的地道口語說法嗎?它是一個(gè)非常有趣的說法：keep one's head above water 可以翻譯為：免遭滅頂之災(zāi)，免于破產(chǎn)，掙扎生存，不舉債，勉強(qiáng)維持生計(jì)等等。

今天我們開始第12課的學(xué)習(xí)。Lesson twelve: How to say “大失所望”in real American English? 第12課 大失所望，地道美語怎么說?
“大失所望”這個(gè)成語出自《史記·高祖本記》。文中寫道：“秦人大失所望。”它的意思就是指原來的希望完全落空，描述了一個(gè)人失望沮喪，煩惱等不舒適的情緒。It means "upset or unhappy because something you hoped for hasn't happened or not been as good , successful , ect. as you expected". So, how to say it in real American Englsih? We can get it in this sentence: If you don't get the job, try not to let your face fall. 如果你得不到這份工作，也不要大失所望。If you/ don't/ get the job, try not to/ let your face fall. 親愛的聽眾朋友，這句話中，您覺得那里表示出了“大失所望”的意思呢?
【課堂詳解】
它是含有face, f-a-c-e, 臉，fall, f-a-l-l, 跌落這兩個(gè)單詞的一個(gè)使役動(dòng)詞短語結(jié)構(gòu)，它是：let one's face fall, 字面意思是：讓某人的臉跌落下來了。生活中，我們春風(fēng)得意，洋洋自得時(shí)，自然會(huì)抬頭挺胸，而當(dāng)我們的希望落空，受到挫敗時(shí)，或多或少有些難受，出于本能我們地會(huì)垂下頭來。頭垂下來了，當(dāng)然臉也跟著跟著垂落下來了。這個(gè)行為動(dòng)作的描寫很容易使我們體驗(yàn)到一個(gè)人做這個(gè)動(dòng)作時(shí)的當(dāng)時(shí)的心理活動(dòng)，從而聯(lián)想出其引申義是“失望”之意。It is similar to saying "disappointed". 其實(shí)，在我們桂林也有這樣的說法。我們說：“你看，她整天跌著個(gè)臉。”就是形容她失望，沮喪，傷心等不愉快的情緒。不知道您的家鄉(xiāng)有沒有這樣的說法。
1 如果要說因“自己的行為” 感到失望?？梢栽趌et one's face fall 后面加上介詞at 或者是about , 介詞at 和about 后面接名詞，也可以接相當(dāng)于名詞的肯定結(jié)構(gòu)或者否定結(jié)構(gòu)的動(dòng)名詞或動(dòng)名詞短語。(1) He let his face fall about not being able to go. 他未能去實(shí)在感到失望。(2) I didn't let my face fall at failing in the exams again and again let a thing slide. 我考試屢次掛科，但我并沒不心煩。順其自然吧。(3) He let his face fall at ( about ) his failure. 他對(duì)他的失敗而感到失望。
2 如果要表示因“某一事實(shí)或情況”而感到失望，可以在let one's face 后面接介詞at/ about/in/by. (1) All of them make their faces fall at the result of the game. 他們對(duì)比賽結(jié)果極為失望。(2) I let my face fall by the quality of the wine. 我對(duì)這酒的質(zhì)量大失所望。(3) He must be very disappointed in his exam results. 他對(duì)他的考試成績一定非常失望。
3 如果要表示因“得不到某東西”或“實(shí)現(xiàn)不了某愿望”而失望，可以在let one's face fall 后面接介詞of。( 1 ) I let my face fall of the car. 沒有得到車子我感到很失望。( 2 ) He let his face fall of his ambition. 他因?qū)崿F(xiàn)不了抱負(fù)而沮喪。
4 要表述“做某事而感到失望”可以在let one's face后面接肯定結(jié)構(gòu)或者是否定結(jié)構(gòu)的動(dòng)詞不定式。(1)She let her face fall not to be chosen in a beauty contest. 她在選美大賽中沒有被選中而大失所望。(2)I didn't let my face fall to know about my husband had an affair with another guy. Let a thing slide. 獲悉我丈夫有婚外情，我并不傷心。順其自然吧。
