When they met again the widow's son did not appear,

當(dāng)開(kāi)學(xué)后再見(jiàn)面時(shí)，寡婦的兒子沒(méi)有出現(xiàn)。

and the farmer's son, being next to him, might now have been at the head of his class.

富農(nóng)的兒子因?yàn)槌煽?jī)緊隨其后，可以成為班上的班長(zhǎng)了。

Instead of seizing the vacant place, however,

但是，他并沒(méi)有搶占這個(gè)空位置，

he went to the widow's house to inquire what could be the cause of her son's absence.

Poverty was the cause; the poor woman found that she was not able,

and so he, poor fellow! had been compelled to give up his schooling, and to return to labor for her support.

The farmer's son, out of the allowance of pocket money which his father gave him,

富農(nóng)的兒子拿出父親給他的零用錢(qián)，

bought all the necessary books and paid for the tuition of his rival.

給他的對(duì)手買齊了所需的課本，交齊了學(xué)費(fèi)，

He also permitted him to be brought back again to the head of his class,

還允許他再次做回班長(zhǎng)的位置。

where he continued for some time, at the expense of his generous rival.

寡婦的兒子繼續(xù)做著班長(zhǎng)，而學(xué)費(fèi)卻是慷慨的對(duì)手提供的。
