關(guān)鍵詞:
There are actually many ways of saying no, different words express different nuance: 有很多種方法說(shuō)“No”,每種方式都有細(xì)微的區(qū)別
1.Nope
Nope is a very casual way of saying no: Nope是特別輕松、口語(yǔ)的方式
If you didn't have the "e" at the end, you will get "nop" not "nope":
"Nope" sounds more friendly and relaxed, whereas "no" can sound too strong: Nope的語(yǔ)氣跟No相比更友善、更輕松,有時(shí)候“No”會(huì)顯得太強(qiáng)硬
- Adam do you wanna join me for lunch?
- No
- Adam, do you like your lunch?
- Nope.
It's rejection after all. They are all going to be negative, but "nope" adds more positivity:其實(shí)所有的No都是拒絕,但是"nope" 可以起到緩解語(yǔ)氣的作用
2.Nah
- Adam, do you wanna join me for lunch?
- Nah, I'd better stay in the office.
It doesn't sound that harsh: 這聽(tīng)起來(lái)就沒(méi)有那么強(qiáng)硬
Be careful don't make it sound like a sheep's bah:
Uh-uh: no
uh-huh: yes
In the "Yes" show, there was another word similar to this:
It's quite similar, just the spelling is different:
Black women:
Children:
Uh-uh sounds a bit whiny: uh-uh聽(tīng)起來(lái)有點(diǎn)抱怨、有點(diǎn)作
Guys don't use this too often: 男的不太用這個(gè)uh-uh
Guys are more forceful, so they'll use somethingf like "no way": 男生說(shuō)no會(huì)更強(qiáng)硬一些,比如用“No way”
4.No way/No way, Jose
No way Jose!
Jose is a common Spanish name: Jose是個(gè)很常見(jiàn)的西班牙語(yǔ)名字
There're many Hispanics in America, so there's a huge Spanish langugage influence:
No way Jose?
Jose is like the "average Joe". It's a common name: Jose就像“老王”, 是個(gè)滿大街可見(jiàn)的名字
It doesn't mean a particular person. It just rhymes: 不是特指某個(gè)Jose, 主要是押韻
It's a quite cute and fun expression: 是個(gè)挺輕松、可愛(ài)的說(shuō)法
But it's still strong and firm: 但是依舊透著一種堅(jiān)定
Between friends:
- Adam, I've found a perfect girl for you. You should totally go out with her.
- Uh-uh. No way, Jose
當(dāng)然不要跟你的老板說(shuō)No way Jose.
- Can you get me the report by 4 pm?
- No way, Jose XXX
英語(yǔ)說(shuō)No的藝術(shù)
5.No Siree/No Siree Bob
"Yes"節(jié)目里說(shuō)道"Yessir"的說(shuō)法,No這里呢,有“No Siree”
Sometimes they even say "no siree Bob". I don't know who Bob is.
Siri
If you're talking to your iPhone you say "No, Siri," but if you are rejecting someone, you say “No, Siree”: “No Siri”的發(fā)音也要注意,跟iPhone里的Siri不一樣哦。
- "Did you drink any wine with dinner tonight?: 今晚晚飯喝酒了嗎?
- "No, Siree. No I did not": 沒(méi)有,沒(méi)喝酒”
It's really not about asking you if you want something. It's probably more about if you did something:“No Siree”多用于否定做過(guò)某件事
“No Siree” can also apply when someone offers you a drink, but you're driving, so you can say:
-"No Siree, I'm driving tonight":
6.Not in a million years
- Adam, you should totally go out with the girl. She is perfect for you. You should really meet her: Adam,
- Not in a million years:
a million: 一百萬(wàn)
a million years: 一百萬(wàn)年
“Not in a million years" means we could wait a million years, and we would still be waiting: "not in a million years" 就是永遠(yuǎn)不會(huì)發(fā)生
This is a fixed expression, so you can't change it to "not in ten years" or "not in a hundred years":
7.Not for all the tea in China
China has a lot of tea: 中國(guó)有很多茶
So when you say "not for all the tea in China": 所以當(dāng)你說(shuō)“not for all the tea in China"
it means that even if you give me all the tea in China, I'll still say "no":
“Not for all the tea in China!"
It's like the last one. It's not gonna happen. Forget about it: 所以跟上一個(gè)not in a million years很像,指絕對(duì)不可能發(fā)生的事
8.Not on your Nelly
This is an English expression, just like "Rightio" which means "yes":
If you have any British friends, you can make them laugh:
That's something only your British friend will get:
Your American friends won't get it; they'll just stare at you blankly:
