笑話原文】

Hearing Aid

A woman rushed into the post office and wanted to see the supervisor.

I asked, “What’s the trouble?”

“I went out this morning,” she began, “and when I came home I found a card saying the mailman tried to deliver a package but no one was home. My husband was in all morning. He never heard a thing!”

After apologizing, I got her the parcel. “Oh, good,” she gushed. “we’ve been waiting for this for ages.”

“What is it?” I asked.

“My husband’s new hearing aid.”

助聽器

一位婦女沖進(jìn)郵局，要見負(fù)責(zé)人。我問她：“出了什么問題?”

她說：“今天早上我出去了。回來的時(shí)候看到一張卡片，說郵差送來一個(gè)包裹，但家里沒有人接。我丈夫一上午都在家，根本就沒有聽到有什么。”

我向她道了歉，又給她拿來了包裹。她說：“噢，太好了，我們已經(jīng)等了好久了。”

詞匯講解】

1.supervisor負(fù)責(zé)人。具體說來，supervisor可以指很多種職務(wù)，比如“(政府)指導(dǎo)者、管理人”、“鎮(zhèn)長、區(qū)長”、“(學(xué)校)視導(dǎo)員”、“(鐵路)工務(wù)段線路主任”。billing supervisor票據(jù)管理員;sales supervisor銷售監(jiān)管;line supervisor生產(chǎn)線主管。

2. mailman郵遞員。這是美式英語中“郵遞員”的說法，而在英式英語中，“郵遞員”是postman.

3. package包裹。也可以指有關(guān)聯(lián)的一組事物：a package of reforms一整套改革;an emergency package一整套應(yīng)急措施。Your hotel suite, transportation and taxi fares were paid for in the package.你的旅館套房、旅費(fèi)和出租汽車費(fèi)都已一并付清。

4. deliver投遞。還有“發(fā)表”的意思：He delivered his speech effectively.他演講生動(dòng)有力。也有“投，擲”的意思：deliver a flashing smile投以微笑。也可以指“拉票”：deliver the necessary votes拉必須的選票

5.apologize道歉。apologize about/for sth.對…表示道歉;apologize to sb.向某人道歉

6.gush滔滔地說話。All the girls gushed about the movie star.姑娘們滔滔不絕地談?wù)撃莻€(gè)電影明星。還有“噴涌”的意思：His eyes gushed sudden tears.他突然淚如泉涌。gush還可以作名詞：a gush of enthusiasm熱情奔放;a gush of pleasure一陣高興
