在lest that, for fear that, in case that等引導(dǎo)的表示消極意義的目的狀語從句中，常常用到虛擬語氣，結(jié)構(gòu)用should＋動(dòng)詞原形，且should能省略。例如：I keep some candle in the house in case that electric power should fail.

由would rather/sooner, would sooner, had rather, would just as soon, would prefer等結(jié)構(gòu)引導(dǎo)的虛擬語氣，其句型結(jié)構(gòu)是這樣的：如果與過去事實(shí)相反，用"would rather/sooner...謂語動(dòng)詞用had done"；如果與現(xiàn)在、將來事實(shí)相反，用"would rather/sooner...謂語動(dòng)詞用did"。

如果使用虛擬語氣，在so that, in order that所引導(dǎo)的目的狀語從句中，從句中的謂語為：can/could/may/might/will/would/should＋do.比如：He goes closer to the speaker so that he can hear him clearer./He read the letter carefully in order that he should not miss a word.

當(dāng)insist意為"堅(jiān)持某種動(dòng)作"時(shí)，才需要用虛擬語氣。如果它的意思是"堅(jiān)持某種觀點(diǎn)，某個(gè)事實(shí)"，就不需要用虛擬語氣了。比如：He insists he is a student.這個(gè)語句表示的是事實(shí)，因此在這個(gè)語句中不能使用虛擬語氣。
