701　very和much

① very可以修飾形容詞和副詞原級，也在少數(shù)情況下修飾形容詞最高級，或同own連用，表示“最大程度，完全，非?！薄?

The boy is very bright. 這孩子很聰明。

He came very quickly. 他很快就來了。

This cake ought to be good，because I used the very best butter. 這蛋糕應(yīng)該很不錯，因為我用了最最好的奶油。

I've done my very best. 我已盡了最大努力。

② very同定冠詞（the）、指示代詞（this，that，these，those）或物主代詞（my，their）連用，修飾名詞起加強語氣的作用，意為“同一的，正是這個，恰好”，不用much。

He kept the room for his very own. 他把那個房間留給自己專用。

What she wants is the very book. 她要的正是這本書。

He regards honour as his very life. 他視名譽為自己的生命。

③ 修飾動詞時要用much或very much，不用very。

I told her that didn't matter much. 我告訴她那關(guān)系不大。

I blame myself very much. 我深深地責(zé)備自己。

④ 修飾形容詞或副詞比較級時要用much，不用very。但much也可修飾形容詞最高級，結(jié)構(gòu)為：much+the+形容詞最高級。

It was much worse than I thought. 這比我想的要糟糕得多。

She is much the best teacher here. 她是這里頂好的老師。

⑤ 修飾介詞短語時應(yīng)用much，不用very。

Much to my surprise she forgot the meeting. 使我大為吃驚的是，她忘了開會。

She is much in trouble. 她深陷困境。

⑥ 修飾afraid，alike等常用作表語的形容詞時，美式英語常用very much，而英式英語常用much。

These soldiers were （very）much afraid of fighting in the city. 這些士兵非常害怕在城市里作戰(zhàn)。

She is very much afraid of talking to her father. 她很怕同她父親說話。

⑦ much和very均可修飾介詞like。

Mary is much/very like her mother. 瑪麗非常像她母親。

⑧ very用于修飾現(xiàn)在分詞轉(zhuǎn)化來的-ing形容詞或已轉(zhuǎn)化為普通形容詞的-ed形容詞；much或very much用于修飾動詞意義強烈的-ed分詞。

He told us a very amusing story. 他給我們講了一個非常有趣的故事。

What he knows is very limited. 他知道的東西非常有限。

She was much/very much annoyed at his decision. 她對他的決定非常惱火。

I was much touched by her sincerity. 我深深地被她的真誠感動了。
