① 表示有規(guī)則的習慣用used to;表示不規(guī)則的習慣用would,且常同always,often,sometimes,frequently,for hours等連用。
He used to climb the hill on Sundays. 他以前常在星期天爬山。(有規(guī)則的習慣,星期天去)
He would sometimes climb the hill when he was young. 他年輕時,有時候會去爬山。(不規(guī)則的習慣,偶爾去而已)
② used to強調(diào)過去與現(xiàn)在的對比,含有“過去是這樣,而現(xiàn)在已不這樣”的意思;would表示的是對過去的“回想”,指以前常那樣做,某種過去的習慣。
Father used not to be so forgetful. 父親從前是不這么忘事的。(意為“父親過去不那么忘事,而現(xiàn)在則好忘事”)
He used to play tennis before his marriage. 他結婚前常打乒乓球。(意為“婚后不打了”)
She would sit at the window for hours,book in hand. 她時常坐在窗前看書,一坐就是幾個小時。(過去時常那樣,過去的習慣)
Sometimes he would walk into the hills and enjoyed himself there all day long. 他有時候會步行到山里去,一整天都在那里享受山林之樂。(過去的反復行為)
③ used to可接動作動詞、狀態(tài)動詞或意向動詞;would只能接動作動詞,不能接狀態(tài)動詞或意向動詞。
There used to be a pine tree there.
那兒從前有一棵松樹。
There would be a pine tree there.
上大學時,我時常洗冷水澡。
When at college,I used to have a cold bath.
When at college,I would like to have a cold bath.
④ 主觀地說過去的事用used to;帶有意志時用would,常表示“想,喜歡”等意。
He would go his own way in spite of her advice. 他不顧她的勸告,一意孤行。(不可用used to)
