① take up通常表示三種含義。
(1)表示“開始學(xué)習(xí)(某學(xué)科),開始做(某事),從事某項活動”。
He will take up mathematics and economics. 他將開始學(xué)習(xí)數(shù)學(xué)和經(jīng)濟學(xué)。
She took up a new job last month. 她上個月開始做一項新工作。
He will take up swimming this summer. 他今年夏天將參加游泳。
(2)表示“占用(時間、地方等)”。
I won't take up much of your time. 我不會占用你多少時間。
This big bed takes up too much room. 這張大床占很大空間。
(3)表示“拿起”。
She took up a book and began to read. 她拿起一本書,開始閱讀。
He took up his cap and left the room. 他拿起帽子,離開了房間。
② take in通常表示兩種含義。
(1)表示“理解,領(lǐng)會”。
I didn't take in what he said. 我不理解他的話。
He doesn't quite take in your lecture. 他不太理解你的講解。
(2)表示“欺騙,詐騙”。
He took me in with lies. 他用謊話騙過了我。
She was taken in by the wicked man. 她被那個壞人騙了。
③ take on通常表示三種含義。
(1)表示“承擔(dān)(工作)”。
He took on the job. 他承擔(dān)了這項工作。
Would you take on the work?你肯承擔(dān)這項工作嗎?
(2)表示“(車、船等)載客”。
The bus stopped to take on some children. 公共汽車停下來帶上一些兒童。
The ship has taken on too many people. 這條船載客過多。
(3)表示“呈現(xiàn)(新面貌)”。
The city has taken on a new look. 這座城市呈現(xiàn)出新的面貌。
④ take over通常表示兩種含義。
(1)表示“接替,接辦”。
She retired last month and I took over her job. 她上個月退休,我便接替了她的工作。
He will take over my duties next week. 他下周將接替我的工作。
(2)表示“接管(政府、公司、機關(guān)等)”。
He will take over the company in a month. 他一個月后接管這家公司。
The newly elected director took over yesterday. 新當(dāng)選的董事長昨天就任。
