586　rich，wealthy和well of

① rich意為“富的，富裕的”，語氣較坦誠，既可指人有錢財，也可指人精神上的富有或在某方面富有。

He was a rich man in his twenties. 他二十幾歲就成了富翁。

She is rich in experience. 她經(jīng)驗豐富。

提示

rich還可引申表示“富饒的，豐富的，寶貴的，富含……的”。

The library is rich in historical books. 這個圖書館有大量的史書。

The country is rich in natural resources. 這個國家自然資源豐富。

Rich foods disagree with her. 她不適宜吃油膩的食物。

② wealthy意為“富裕的”，通常指財富，說一個人wealthy，表示他擁有大量的財產(chǎn)，且社會地位較顯赫。

He was born in a wealthy family. 他出生于富裕家庭。

She became quite wealthy later. 她后來很富有。

提示

wealthy也可指在某方面富有，這時相當(dāng)于rich。

He is wealthy in humour. 他極富幽默。

③ be well off表示“小康的，富裕的”，在程度上不如wealthy和rich。這三個詞的富裕程度為：well off（小康）→wealthy（富的）→rich（富裕的）

He is only well （off），but not rich. 他只是小康而已，談不上富裕。
